Body Camera Video Captures Scammer’s Change of Heart
9NEWS Denver | An officer's body camera captured a woman who convinced a couple to buy $20,000 worth of gift cards, admitting to the scam.
Erin West, a former California prosecutor who now runs Operation Shamrock, a nonprofit dedicated to ending scams, said she’d never seen a scammer do something like this on video before.
“That is a person who has a heart and realizes that what she's just done is steal thousands of dollars from an elderly couple, and though she wasn't willing to give it back, what she was willing to do is try and stop the bleeding,” West said.
“What I know from the work that I've done is that a lot of the people that are behind the phone are being forced to do that work for some reason, whether they've been trafficked in to do the work, or tricked into doing that work, or they're there because there are no other jobs where they live,” she said.
