NBC Bay Area interviews Operation Shamrock’s Erin West and Amnesty International’s Montse Ferrer about the massive online scamming operations.

Many of the scammers are held against their will in huge compounds, or “scam farms.” They look like apartment buildings, business centers, and even resorts — until you notice the massive fences surrounding them and the lack of activity around them.

Managed from places like Cambodia, scammers target people in the United States because other wealthy countries, like Australia and the UK, require more accountability from banks to recover some scam money transfers.
