Crypto ATMs look like normal ATMs. You may have seen them in a convenience store. CNN’s Kyung Lah confronts a scammer who tried to steal $10,000 from her using a crypto ATM.

According to the FBI, Americans lost around $240 million to crypto ATM scams in the first six months of 2025, about double the pace of similar scams last year.

That’s considerable profit for the companies that operate the machines. Crypto ATM companies make money on each transaction. According to CNN, they often mark up the price of cryptocurrency by 20% to 30% or more.
